a sunny Saturday evening

I’m so behind on here! I’m sort of spinning my wheels here (not literally, sadly) with all the various knitting and designing projects in various stages of completion. I think it’s high time I clear out some WIPs, because I’m feeling buried.

As promised (finally), here’s my finished giant granny square!

giant granny square complete!

More photos?

And just because I got myself a new lens (A Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 Macro):

mm, macro

Oooooh, love that macro action. This lens rocks.

Giant Granny Square
Hook: 6.5 mm
Pattern: Granny Square from the Purl Bee

Yarn: 7 balls of Noro Taiyo in colourway 1 (otherwise known as “neapolitan ice cream”!) plus 1 skein of Coldharbour Mill organic merino DK for the border, held double.

As an aside, this is the smoothest, sexiest merino ever. And I don’t think you can even buy it anywhere – I got it at IKnit Day in London last year. Does someone want to pick me up some more this year?!

For the border I just did 2 rounds of single crochet around the whole thing. Really finishes it off, I think! The final measurement is about 48″ square – plenty big for a couch blanket. I think I’ve given up my idea of sewing on a cotton backing, because, well, I don’t think it’ll ever happen! The blanket’s plenty warm enough as is.

I even have a new crochet project on the go – a ripple blanket!

new crochet project

(Have I mentioned how much I love my new macro?)

I’m using a 5mm hook and many, many random leftovers and single skeins. Unfortunately it turns out that crochet isn’t particularly nice to my left wrist – so I’m going to have to take it easy on this for awhile. I’m thinking it’ll just be one of those random projects around the house that I can pick up and put down whenever!

    Lovely granny square blanket!

I read your blog regularly, and enjoy it a lot. Love your work too! I am working on being less of a lurker:) I think this link may be the yarn you are talking about: http://www.greatbritishyarns.co.uk/acatalog/Coldharbour_Mill_yarn.html

    Happy Knitting!

Great granny square! I haven’t crocheted in years, but this giant granny square idea is intriguing. I have a lot of miscellaneous colors of worsted weight wool that could be eaten up in one.

I still don’t know how to crochet :) I keep seeing awesome projects like this one that I want to make, so I guess it’s time to learn!

Love the granny square blanket! Makes me want to get out a crochet hook and make one, too!

Great pix with the new macro. And I love the giant granny square! Yours is the second I’ve seen recently, and I’m starting to have granny square envy. I’ve never crocheted one before, but it looks pretty logical. Uh-oh…

Gorgeous, Laura!! I’m not very good at crocheting but this awesome blanket makes me feel like grabbing the hook right away! It has come out really beautiful… and in my case, it would be a great way to eat up tons of leftover stash :)

That lens is fabulous, and now, I want one. It’s awesome. Your blanket is so pretty! The blanket is so much fun, and I’m four skeins into mine, using Noro Taiyo in the #4 colorway. It has the pinks, lime greens, browns. I love it. I have had so many compliments on it, and all because it’s one huge square, instead of many.

Coldharbour does mail order…but I believe they only ship within the UK.
I always stock up on their organic merino (it’s water wheel spun!) when I’m in Devon.

I love, love, love the giant granny square! The colors of the yarn are very grown up, you know? Leave it up to the folk at Noro to make good combos! I know I couldn’t do that if I was choosing colors on my own, one at a time.

It’s absolutely stunning! I need to improve my crochet skills, as I’d love to snuggle up in a giant granny square.

That’s such a gorgeous blanket. I’m very tempted to try one but already have a longterm crocheted squares blanket project on the go and mustn’t get distracted.

I love your giant granny square blanket! It turned out great and looks so cozy. You inspired me to follow the tutorial for the granny square. It was the first one that I actually understood though I definitely need practice. :-)

And the macro shots are beautiful! Macro shots are always my favorite.

The giant granny square is really neat looking. It makes me think of the Georgia O’Keefe paintings, where she blows up one small flower into a huge work of art!

wow, that is beautiful! Loves!! and boy does it make me want to pick up a crochet hook!

So I’m a big time lurker but I wanted to say that I love your granny blanket and the ripple looks like it’ll be just as beautiful. I’m about to start a ripple blanket with all of my scraps and single skeins as well-just have to get everything in order. ::sigh::

I love your new macro lens too! It’s amazing how it gets every detail, down to the color gradations in that heathery green yarn in your ripple. Is it the same yarn used for your B-side cardigan?

You completely and utterly corrupted me. I have all but forsaken my knitting to make giant granny squares. After the first on in Noro Iro (62″ square), I was overcome by the need to make a king-sized one for my bed. Since that much Noro would pretty much have guaranteed my kids would have to go to community college, I am making it out of tons of stash leftovers, and completely loving it!
