evidence of life

I’ve been spending pretty much all my time this week more or less like this:

5.365 - the view from here

Insert Doctor Who and some Stargate:Atlantis in for the Dr. Horrible (which is SO awesome by the way, you should all go watch it) and the Mooi shawl in for the pink thermal, and that’s today.

Thanks for all the well wishes for my ankle – it’s definitely better, the swelling’s gone down a fair bit and I’m hobbling around okay (although still resting! of course!). I’m aiming to be back at work on Monday, although I might leave Tuesday in Natalie’s capable hands! We’ll see – I’m probably in no shape to be standing around in the dye studio next week.

Despite all the resting and sitting around time, I’m getting surprisingly little done in the way of work! I’m knitting the edging of the Mooi shawl now, and it’s coming along nicely.

starting the edging!

I like that it’s knitted in along the edge. It’s pretty!

I’ve also been writing a number of lists –

8.365 reject

At the end of the month I’m headed out on a jet plane to visit with Ysolda! You might remember she came and stayed with me back in May, so now it’s my turn. I’ll admit I’m apprehensive about the trip, mostly the flying – I’m not a great flyer and it’ll be the longest one I’ve been on! Across water and stuff! Yikes!

I’m flying in and out of Edinburgh, but in between we’ll be taking some trips to London and Paris – we’ve got some accommodation in London, but we could still use some for a couple nights in both cities. Hostel recommendations, offerings of couches? Would be awesomely appreciated!

Suggestions of things to do in each city would be fantastic too! We’ll definitely be hitting up iknit day in London on the 6th, but other than that, I think we pretty open to recommendations!

You should go on the London Eye. It was a little pricey when I was there (12 pounds) and it was the end of the day, so I didn’t go, but I wish I had, and if you’re into views, it’ll be amazing.

Yay! I hope to see you at the IKnit day!

oooh I went to the Iknit day last year and it was fab. I think it will be even better this year. I can’t wait. I recommend going to Liberty and to Borough Market in London. Can I suggest you also visit Glasgow- only 40 minutes on the train from Edinburgh and there’s a great cafe next to the first K1 yarns!

Dr. Horrible was a lot of fun to watch, though be careful. The music is strangely (maybe even horribly) addictive. I need to make sure I have my iPod around in case it gets stuck in my head.

That vacation should be a blast!

I hope you are feeling better! If it is still open, go to Giverny to see Monet’s gardens. Musee D’Orsay is also a must , my favorite…. Chocolate and macarrons from Pierre Herme (72, rue Bonaparte – St germain des pres. Not cheap at all, but SO GOOOOOD, the BEST), Laduree, Spices and jams from l’Epicerie (small shop at Il de St Louis). It is beautiful! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Paris, I just think it is the most beautiful city in the world….
If you need any other question, let me know…

I’m sorry about your foot! I hope it’s better for your trip. Wow! I’m so envious of that one. Do you need someone to carry your bags? I’m free then! I can’t wait to hear all about it!

I have seen Dr. Horrible – it’s wonderful! But, who doesn’t love anything the Whedons produce?

    Deadwood… Firefly…

Hello, I’ve been a reader of your blog for a long time, but never left a comment. I live in Paris and my family in law owns a small 2* hotel in the 15th arrondissment. Send me an email for more information.

A must see for every knitter in Paris is “La Droguerie” near Les Halles!

    Best regards,

    Evelien

Check out Royal Court Apartments for London. I paid about $80 a night for a room which had two beds and a kitchenette and it’s right by Hyde Park so you can walk to a lot of places. I booked through expedia and got a pretty good deal.

look for JK Rowling in Edinburgh. :) That’s what I’d be doing. Enjoy your trip.

Ah Paris. My favorite. Musee D’Orsay is wonderful. Sacre Couer in Montmarte
incredible. Bon Marche department store has a wonderful yarn department. Walk down the Champs Elyssee. Tourisme Hotel on LaMotte Piquet is very reasonable and they speak English. Great location.

Glad to hear you’re feeling better. But I hope you got an x-ray? I fell down one time (I think it was a Saturday or Sunday), thought I was okay (denial!) and then went to the doctor (of course, the latest possible appointment on a Friday afternoon)… found out I fractured my foot in TWO places. I had to wait until Monday to get a cast since I waited too long to see a doctor. You don’t want to go through that, I promise!

On a lighter note, you’re trip sounds awesome! ;-P

Glad to see your ankle’s on the mend :) I know it’s probably not much help if you’ve already planned out your holiday but I have a free house in Dublin – you are welcome to come, share and knit in ye olde Viking town ;)

If I can add my two cents about Paris. My spouse is French. If you like ice cream, there is Berthillon on l’Ile St-Louis. And then there is La Maison du chocolat that makes good dark chocolates. I have some more suggestions but the links are on my computer at home. Please let me know if you need more.

When I was in London, I made a trip to see Stonehenge and it was pretty cool. I took the National Rail from Waterloo station and it was very convenient, fast, and affordable. Cheaper than joining a group and you’ll save time by leaving whenever you want. I’m not sure if you’re into historical landmarks, but I thought it was a beautiful place, so happy I went. It’s one of the 7 wonders of the medieval world, it was worth seeing. You’ll love Paris, I was so excited to see the Mona Lisa.

I bought some Manos silk blend to make the B-Side cardigan, can’t wait to start! Hope your ankle recovers soon!

I hope you’re planning a trip to Liberty’s in London. The fabrics are amazing. The London Eye is great. Walk down Carnaby St and/or Portobello Rd. National Gallery for art (and have afternoon tea in their National Dining Rm. It’s delicious!) You can’t go wrong seeing anything in Paris: Pont Neuf, Notre Dame, Marais district. Eat EVERYTHING, especially pastries. Pere La Chaise cemetery is actually very interesting. Sarah Bernhardt, Chopin, Pissaro, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison all buried there.
    Get well soon!

What a fun trip! I spotted this link on Freakonomics today and thought of your request for places to stay in London and Paris. May be worth checking out, although I can’t recommend it personally.

When me and my boyfriend were in Paris, we stayed at Hotel des Allies, which is in the Latin Quarter close to the Jardin du Luxembourg and Gare Montparnasse. It’s very cheap, has free internet access in the lobby, the staff are friendly (and speak English!) and the neighbourhood is absolutely charming – there’s a small market not far from there where they sell fruit every day. :) Also lots of nice, non-expensive cafés. There isn’t any toilet in the room, but there’s a sink and a small balcony. I highly recommend it and would stay there again.

I hope you two have a nice trip – can’t wait to see pictures!!

How fun! I’ve only been to Scotland once, but I loved it. Glasgow, Balloch, Edinburgh, Sterling, *sigh*. I’ve wanted to go back ever since. I hope you have a wonderful time!

Me and a friend are also going to Paris, in September, and managed to find super cheap accomodation. I’m not sure what it’ll be like, as *very* cheap, I think we’re paying £13 a night, but all we want is a bed so hopefully will be fine! :) If you’re interested, website is here: http://www.aijparis.com/framea.htm It’s in Bastille district also, which is pretty central and near Notre Dame. Have a lovely trip!! Planning is fun. xx

My Paris suggestion: wander around Montmartre (metro Abesses) and look for the fabric and yarn shops! Lots of cool little ones to find and explore. Need some great Paris veggie restaurant recommendations? let me know!
