  • happy new year!

    One last FO of 2005:

The Urban Aran! I finished sewing in the zipper about ten minutes before midnight! Sorry the pictures are dark; it was the middle of the night afterall.

    Urban Aran
    Pattern: Patons “Street Smart” booklet
Yarn: Elann Highland Chunky, “Redwood”, 15 skeins
    Needles: Denise US 9
    Finished: December 31, 2005

Notes: I love, love, LOVE this sweater – the nice squishy yarn (which also softened a lot with a Eucalan soak), the lovely ribs and cables, the zipper! I modified the sweater into a cardi by just splitting the front piece into two, and added a three-stitch selvege to the fronts for the zipper. I also changed the collar to just 2×2 rib rather continuing the back and front cables up. The seaming was pretty easygoing, actually, even though it was a lot of seaming in reverse stockinette.

I think it just might be my new favourite sweater – easy to wear, and nice and warm!

Here you can see the great cabling on the sleeve.

    The laid-out-flat shot.

Wishing you all a safe, happy, and knitterly new year!

Time to get some things off the WIP list!

Goodbye, retro rib sock. Started in October and only this much done? I’m pretty sure this isn’t going to work out.

In more successful news, I’m working on the collar for the Urban Aran – I think I’ll probably finish that tonight, then block tomorrow.

And since the Retro Rib is toast, I need a plain sock to work on whenever – in Fleece Artist sock, Renaissance colourway. Aren’t the colours fabulous? I think this would’ve been a great yarn to do a pair of Jaywalker socks in, but I’m really wanting the plain sock about now.

I finally gave into my urge to buy some Blue Sky Alpaca – I bought 2 skeins of bulky in brown. Super warm scarf, here I come!

  • Last night was the lettuce knit anniversary party/cookie exchange, as I’m sure you’ve seen on some other blogs! I took my camera but didn’t take any photos, but you can see some great ones on Stephanie’s, Maria’s, and Mel’s blogs.

Here’s a photo of the little guy at the party, with one of my (pre-)felted clogs on his head! Cuuuuute. Photo by Mel.

I managed to finish the second one last night, so here they are, hilariously big next to my size 8 feet. They just need felting, and that’s another one done!

I’ve also finished another pair of socks, this time out of Artyarns Supermerino, on 3.5 mm needles:

Unfortunately this photo doesn’t do the yarn justice – it’s just a gorgeous apple green with the darker flecks. Darn sun, being all elusive and such!

Tonight I finally plied some yarn that’s been on the bobbins for awhile – I’d bought a baggie of silk hankies awhile back and spun them up in..I think it was November, on the thinner side. It hardly looked like any, but because it was thinner, the yardage was pretty good! I plied it with some merino that I finished spinning last week or so.

You can see the silk shiney bits better in this photo, I think:

It’s really, really soft and I just love it! I think I’m going to knit a Flower Basket Shawl with it – I just need to decide whether I want to dye the yarn (probably a burgundy) or not. Actually, upon typing that, I think I will dye it. I’m not much of a white-wearing person.

Any tips on mixing up a nice burgundy dye? I’m using Ashford acid dyes (I’ve got some Cushings left too, in turkey red, scarlet, black, and blue).
