It’s been all secret knitting around here lately, which isn’t very good for blogging! But now that the weather has turned (maybe?) and it’s a bit brighter and warmer, it was time to get some garden stuff going.

I picked up a bunch of tiny pots at the dollar store to start my seedlings this year – I’m a bit tired of peat pellets, and I can reuse these ones next year! Plus, the plants will have a little more room and maybe I won’t have to repot them again before transplanting.

I’m starting extra tomato plants this year even though we won’t have room for all of them on the deck. Some local friends will get lucky with free plants!

The basil is doing nicely from seed. I’m planning to do aggressive pruning on the plants to see if I can get them to grow bushier. Varieties: Italian large leaf and dark opal basil from Cubits.

Tomato varieties: Riesenstraube, which was the first to germinate, looks pretty great and was our biggest producer last year; Black Cherry, Ivory Pear, Black Prince, Purple Cherokee, Sungold, Matt’s Wild Cherry. I was really excited to find the Sungold seeds at West Coast Seeds, along with a small variety of zucchini (Patio Star) and peas (Little Marvel)!

Unfortunately even with my nifty popsicle-stick labelling system I’m pretty sure I’ve mislabeled at least one tomato!

I haven’t spun much in ages but there’s been lots popping up in my Instagram, and it’s inspiring! I wanted to take a little time off knitting this past weekend so I pulled out a few braids. Marge is unimpressed. (Yes, we have the Lego Simpsons House.)

    new ruffles!

Hopefully I’ll have some new patterns to share with you soon!

  • October Garden

There’s not much left to look at, but I’m glad we finally got out to finish harvesting everything. We;re out of yard waste bags though, so the real cleanup will have to wait a bit!

I’m going to have to figure out something else to do with these green tomatoes (I made hot dog relish with the others!) – maybe fried?

What was left of the basil and chard went right into a nice pasta casserole with mushrooms, red pepper, and bechamel sauce, with panko breadcrumbs and parmesan on top.

New on the needles: a cabled sweater out of Zen Yarn Garden superwash worsted. I started another sweater with this year awhile ago, but it didn’t really turn out. I’m hopeful for this one, I’m addicted to knitting it!

I have five projects on my desk right now – four sweaters and a shawl. Startitis much? I’ve been working out a sock pattern in my head that I want to cast on, too.

  • Happy Equinox!

This weekend we spent some time cleaning out the garden a bit – too bad a dying garden isn’t very photogenic! We harvested lots of green tomatoes and carrots, and cut down the dead plants. The herbs and beans are still going okay, so they’re left in for now.

Do I need to peel the cherry tomatoes if I want to make some chutney or relish out of them? Because that would be super tedious.

I joined the sleeves to the yoke of my Candlewick sweater, knit about half the yoke, then realized I screwed it up. Ah, well. It’s all fixed up now.

I had some time in the car to knit as well, so I brought this brown cardigan along. It’s not getting much attention right now, but I’m sure it’s going to be one that I wear a lot! The yarn is really soft and smooth, it’s lovely to knit with.

I’ve also added some new skeins to my tiny handspun yarn shop!. This one is a really squishy Polwarth, dyed by Woolgatherings on Etsy. Check out my handspun page for more!

Lastly, some exciting links to share! Robin Hunter interviewed me for her blog last month, and it’s just gone up.

Patternfish has also made me the Designer of the Month, and I’m so honoured! You can read their September newsletter here.
