• monday is the new sunday

Huh. I suppose my view of “yuck, monday” has been modified by my school/work schedule – today I don’t have a lab, so it was the first day I really slept in (to noon, but it’s more about the attitude – that I don’t have to wake up if I don’t want to) and it felt like Sunday. Tonight I’m going downtown to a friend’s house to “work” on a linguistics assignment (seriously, we need to do the work before we can do anything else).

I’ve considered whether or not I want to blog a lot about the Tartan Jacket. If I blog less about it, there’s less pressure to put up pretty pictures and impress you all with my speediness of knitting. Plus, it’ll be more of a surprise when it’s done. So, a compromise – I’ll write about it, but I won’t put up any pictures. There are lots of other things to blog about knitting-wise, anyway.

Syncopated ribs is sitting in my workbasket, waiting patiently for a collar and cuffs. I finished up the body and even sewed up the sides to the underarm last week, to try the fit – it’s a bit long. But when I wore it for a few minutes, I found I liked the length. At least it won’t be like all those stupidly short sweaters that expose the bottom of the back when any movement occurs. It’s really nice and comfy though, so I’ll finish that up sometime this week.

I cast on for my LoTech on the subway yesterday – as a simple stockinette project done in pieces, I think I’ll keep that one for the on-the-go project for now. No Monk’s Satchel yet.

As for the Tartan Jacket….I’m done the back. And that’s the biggest piece, so hooray! I think I’ll do a sleeve next. I’m going to need to do a serious hard blocking on the pieces, though, to get them to size. I’m a bit nervous about that.

    Ciao for now!

  • gauge issues and an amazing night

First off, the book launch party for Amy Singer’s new book knitwit was AWESOME. The weather was great, there were tons of people there, and free food! You can’t go wrong ;) Lots of A-listers, including (no links because I’m very tired, maybe I’ll add them tomorrow) Stephannie, Jenna, Indigirl Amy, and Veronik Avery, to name a few. And I won a door prize!

    Very cool.

    I’ve started my Tartan Jacket!

The stitch and even the intarsia is SO addictive. I’ve done quite a bit more since this pic. Unfortunately, being the rebellious knitter I am, I didn’t swatch and am therefore having gauge issues. I’m using the suggested needle size, 9 mm (US13). Width-wise I’m ok, perhaps a quarter inch off the final measurements of the back piece. But as for row gauge…it’s supposed to be 20 rows to 4″. And since I’m nearing 40 rows, I should have nearly 8″. What have I got? Wait for it…

5 inches. Yep. Since the width is working and I wouldn’t want the fabric any looser (plus I realllllly don’t want to frog what I have), I’m going to add another horizontal stripe section between what is given and the 13″ to the armholes the piece needs to be. I’ll add it to the front pieces as well, but maybe not on the sleeves. We’ll see when I get there.

I need a fall-weight poncho! Something to cuddle myself up in! It was so nice and cool tonight, although I would’ve been happier with a heavier sweater or a warm body…

  • new navy

I just got home from Old Navy, which we (my parents, sister, me) went to only because we have this coupons for $10 when you spend $50 that we wanted to use before they expire tomorrow. Man, the stuff there really does suck. Anyway, I bought this little cardie…

but I really liked this one:

It was nice and soft and comfy…unfortunately, made of acrylic and $45. I need me a comfy comfy cardie like that! Must start knitting something with Cotton-Ease! I was going to do it in stockinette, but ribbing is so nice. The white cardie was 2×2 rib on the bottom and collar, and 2×4 rib on the main body. It had a bit of shaping, and folded-over buttonbands.

Anyway, progress shot of syncopated ribs:

Very very close to finishing the body, then there’s cuffs and collar (don’t really know what I’m going to do with that yet). Steam is running out on this project, it’s in danger of being tossed aside in favour of the cardie-to-come and tartan jacket.

I’m gonna go knit while….reading my textbook. Yeah, that’s it.
