I’m tired, stressed and cranky. And I have another large test on Wednesday – this one I haven’t studied for (it’s a format that isn’t as memorization-y as the test I had today, but still). Joy.

Even my sock has been fighting. I tried a short-row heels, because the tall socks fit so well in the foot (an aside – I either need to rip back and redo with less increases – gahhh – or put some effort into finishing betty, otherwise these will never be worn outside the bedroom) and the short-row heel is easy and fast. Alas, it looked like crapola. So I ripped it and did a normal heel flap gusset thing.

    One side looks okay…

The other side…not so much (i don’t know how clear this is going to come out in the photo).

Oh well. I’m not going to rip again. I also f-ed up in the heel in a few other places, but I those aren’t really visible. Overall, the sock is real purdy, and it fits nice and snugly.

I’m quite happy with how the ribbing looks. Unfortunately, now it feels like I’m spinning my wheels – I’m knitting, but the foot isn’t getting longer. I’m still aiming to finish this sock tonight though. Then I have to make another one…hopefully the second sock will be faster (a girl can dream). I also really want some more Lorna’s, in Watercolors, but I really need to restrain myself.

Plus I just bought a shitload of yarn from elann.

Well, at least I know that we’ll be getting more Lorna’s later on (been ordered, but it takes so long to come) so maybe I can get some later on this spring. By the way, does anyone know of cotton sock yarns that are this pretty? Regia cotton is 45% cotton, I think, and comes in some cool colours, but it also has wool in it. Summer sock yarn suggestions?

p.s. check this out. Who sold him his first yarn, baby? RIGHT HERE.

  • pattern time

Since I don’t have any knitting progress (that I can show you), it seems like a good time to share my top-down cardi pattern. I’ll probably make a nice page with this, too, but for now here it is.

    Top-Down Raglan Cardigan

Abbreviations: K: knit, P: purl, Kf&b: knit into the front and back of stitch
    pm: place marker
    sl m: slip marker
    RS: right side
    WS: wrong side

    Gauge: 5 stitches per inch

    Materials:
    2 skeins Manos del Uruguay (A) – 138 yds/100 g
    2 skeins Patons Classic Wool (B) – 223 yds/100 g

    Needles:
    5 mm 16″ circular
5 mm 24″ circular or straight needles
or needle size to obtain gauge.

    Yoke:
With A, cast on 87 stitches. Work K1, P1 ribbing for 1″, beginning and ending each right side row with a knit stitch.

    Next row (RS): K 15, pm, K 13, pm, K 31, pm, K 13, pm, K15.

Next row (WS): K 5, purl to last 5 sts, K5.

Row 1 (RS): *K to 1 st before marker, Kf&b, sl m, Kf&b* repeat from * to * 3 more times. K to end of row.

    Row 2 (WS): K 5, purl to last 5 stitches, K 5.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until raglan length (along increases) measures about 9.5″ or desired length. You can slip the stitches to scrap yarn and try it on; finish with a wrong side row when the increase lines meet under your arm.

Next row (RS): K to first marker, slip stitches between next two markers onto scrap yarn (these are the sleeve stitches), cast on 5 stitches to the right-hand needle, K to next marker, slip stitches between marker to scrap yarn, cast on 5 stitches to right-hand needle, K to end of row.

    Body:
Work back and forth in stockinette stitch (K RS rows, P WS rows), changing to B when desired. Work until the body is 10″ or two inches short of total desired length. Work K1, P1 ribbing for two inches, then bind off in pattern.

    Sleeve:
Slip sleeve stitches back onto a 16″ circular needle. With B, pick up and knit 3 stitches under the arm, place marker, pick up and knit 2 stitches, and join. Knit in the round, decreasing on either side of the marker every 5 rows to desired narrowness (I decreased 10 times). Knit straight until sleeve is 2″ short of desired length, work K1, P1 ribbing for two inches and then bind off in pattern. Repeat for other sleeve.

A good blocking is always encouraged!

  • c-c-c-c…

Damn, it’s cold. Would’ve been a perfect day to wear my oatmeal top-down raglan, but I haven’t gotten around to trying to stretch it out again.

My Highland Wool has been bought by Leanne (I think), so yay! I also received a refund from Helloknitty.com – I’d ordered a couple balls of fixation from them but hadn’t heard anything about it being shipped. So I emailed and asked for my money to be refunded if it hadn’t gone yet. So now I’ll have some money in my Paypal account to put towards that Elann order, although that also means I need to get another four balls of Esprit for Mon Petit Chou. Ah well, at least I didn’t end up paying so much more for the Fixation.

What else…not much going on, I’m working on a project that I miiiiight submit to Knitty’s fall issue depending on how it turns out. So I can’t blog about that. But there will hopefully be some other progress and non-boring entries soon…

…might have to be after my big test on Monday, though.
