  • two skeins? yes!

I finished the first thuja sock on Friday, and one skein did one sock. Actually I should’ve done a half inch more of cuff to use up all the yarn – so yes, two skeins is enough for a pair of women’s socks. I used 3.25 mm needles (I knit loosely) with a gauge of about 23 stitches/10 cm. 5.5″ cuff and I wear a US 8 shoe.

Today I bound off the feather and fan shawl, and I just barely had enough of the last colourway to bind off with! Good thing I remembered that I’d wound off a few yards for the intarsia panel on one of them Christmas present robots.

I still have quite a bit of the yarns I used left over – there’s just something about that last colourway though, the one in the tiny amounts, that I just love. I didn’t dye it myself, so I can’t take credit for that, but I just loooove the way the wool spun up.

The shawl is blocking now, and I tell ya – it’s HUGE. It’s really the maximum size I’d make for a shawl for myself. I like smaller ones that I can scrunch up and use as scarves. Speaking of which, I’ve been wearing my simple yet effective all week, and I just adore it! I’m starting to get into wearing it just normally (as a shawl across my shoulders), too.

  • shawlcrazy? maybe sockcrazy

It ain’t all shawls around here, although there will definitely be more of them coming!

How about a stack of socks in progress, instead? Jill’s not the only sockcrazy one!

All at different stages, in the (very rare) sunlight. In the front we’ve got one completed Fleece Artist sock, which started life as a stockinette sock but was far too big, so I ripped, reduced the number of stitches, and ribbed it. Back left is a skein of brown and pink Artyarns Supermerino that will become socks from the latest Knitty. I’ve only got two skeins, but I’ll shorten the leg and we’ll see. I know the smart thing would be to go toe up, but I actually do love going top down.

And in the back right, we’ve got a bandwagon Jaywalker sock in progress! I liked it but didn’t love it at first, but now I do! I’m using Cherry Tree Hill in “Green Mountain Madness”, size 0 dpn and the smaller size.

Shawl progress! I’m just about done with the feather and fan shawl, only about 6 or so rows to go (further along than this photo). It’s getting quite big, so I’m doing one more stripe of the yellow/green (the third colour from the top) and then casting off. Unfortunately while working the second purple strip last night, I messed up and had to rip out a couple (loooong) rows. But all is back on track.

  • simple yet effective shawl

Here ya go! This super-easy, super-quick shawl is knit from the neck (top) down. Work with a thinner yarn and bigger needles for a lacey effect, or thicker yarn for something cozy and warm.

    simple yet effective

    Materials

    – chunky weight yarn, approximately 350-500 yards depending on desired size

    – 8 mm (US11) 24” circular needle

    – removable stitch marker

    Abbreviations

    k: knit

    p: purl

    yo: yarn over

    Gauge

    about 8 stitches/10 cm (4”), after blocking

    Shawl

    Cast on 5 stitches.

Row 1 (RS): k1, yo, k1, yo, k1 (mark this st as centre st), yo, k1, yo, k1.

Row 2 (WS): k all stitches

Row 3 (RS): k1, yo, k to centre stitch, yo, k1, yo, k to last stitch, yo, k1.

Increase on all RS rows as for row 3 while working garter and stockinette bands. This is what I did, but I did it randomly – so let your random inner self play! I ended with stockinette because I ran out of yarn, but I’d suggest ending off with a few rows of garter stitch to ward off any rolling.

8 rows garter st (including rows 1-3)

    6 rows stockinette stitch

    6 rows garter st

    8 rows stockinette st

    8 rows garter st

    8 rows stockinette st

    10 rows garter st

    10 rows stockinette st

    8 rows garter st

    4 rows stockinette st

Continue working increases on all RS rows while alternating bands until shawl is big enough, or you run out of yarn. Bind off loosely in purl. Block, then weave in ends. So simple!
