  • big needle, small needle

Well, the needles aren’t that big really, but bigger than I’ve been using lately! I started a new sweater project out of the Fibranatura Mermaid I bought while Ysolda was here:

Which proceeded to go really fast on 4.5 mm needles. I’m almost up to the armholes on the body. It’s slowed down a bit this week because of other stuff, but I’m determined to bust this one out!

In sharp contrast, I just started a new pair of plain socks out of some nice Jojoland Melody, toe up.

    On very small needles.

    whatwhat?

I knit really loosely, so my socks usually turn out to be around 8 stitches per inch on 2 mm. I want some tighter-knit socks though, hence the 1.5 mm! It doesn’t feel super crazy thin, but I do notice that it’s a little harder to control splittyness in the yarn – it’s easy to catch part of the yarn rather than the whole strand since the needle is so thin!

Does anyone have any suggestions for really thin sock yarn or heavy laceweight yarn that would hold up for socks on this size of needle?

  • take it off my hands, part IV – the yarn one

Holy comments, Batman! Awesome. I knew that’d bring out the lurkers ;)

So, without further ado, the winners:

    Twinkle’s Weekend Knits – Jeanine
Classic Knits at Home – Michelle

Winners have been emailed. I felt bad I couldn’t give books to everyone!

So up next… a rather large yarn destash. Prices are in USD or CDN (they’re close enough anyway) and include shipping to Canada and the US. If you’re international, let me know and I’ll amend the price. Payment by Paypal, balance transfer or credit cards – and please don’t send money until I’ve confirmed. Please, help me make room!

    Visit my destashing page!

Finally, since every blog entry needs a photo (well, not really, but whatever), my finished Manos Silk cardigan body. Any ideas for names?

This took a bit under four skeins, so I think I’m on track to use just 7 skeins for the whole sweater!

P.S. Insidious spammers have somehow hacked in and may be putting in horrible filthy links at the bottom of my posts, as read in blog readers (but not on the blog page itself, weirdly). Any ideas on how to stop them? Please let me know if you see anything off! I’ve deleted some stuff already, and it doesn’t show up in the RSS feed anymore, but Bloglines may not have updated yet. Argh.

  • back in action

I’m back! Indy was good, although I didn’t get the chance to check out that yarn store you were all on about! Next time.

I cam back to the fabric I ordered from Cia’s Palette last week. Yay, fabric!

    fabric from Cia's Palette

I think the sewing bug comes in waves, definitely stronger in the spring and summer when I can whip up some skirts and bags (well, mostly skirts really) to wear out and about. And I think my laptop sleeve experience spurred on the sewing thing, too.

Not that I don’t already have a fabric stash. Cuz I do. I really must figure out what to make with it all! Anyway, I had trouble narrowing down the fabrics I wanted to something within reason, but I ended up with (left to right):

    – Alexander Henry fabric for a skirt, perhaps wrappy-type,
    – unknown “Homespun Simple Check”, probably for a dress,
    – some Amy Butler for a top
    – and the last two pieces are Chocolate Lollipop (which I love!), for a top and a skirt.

The tops will definitely be of the Built by Wendy cap-sleeve persuasion, from the pattern at right. I’ve never made a top before, but since this one’s a raglan and supposedly very easy, I think I can do it! I might try the dress, too, if the top turns out well.

A closeup of the Galaxy print. I’m thinking a nice flowy circle skirt, my favourite for the summer. All the fabric’s in the process of being washed at the moment, and I think I might even give something (a top) a whirl tonight.

In the meanwhile, I’m taking a chill day and watching some Buffy, and knitting my Manos silk sweater – it’s coming out great!
