  • of sweaters and squares

Despite my being sort of ….eh about the knitting right now (and even my not-that-pumped is still pretty damn obsessed), I’ve been working on this raglan out of Silky Tweed.

I think I’m just about to the underarm now – I’ll probably do a few more rounds to make sure it’s long enough. Then I’ll have to decide what I’m going to do for the yoke! Luckily, I think I’m going to have enough yarn. I’ve got two more skeins of the grey left for the yoke, and the front’s going to be a vneck, no so worries there. Maybe I’ll start a sleeve just for a change.

Last night at SnB with stephannie looking over my shoulder (just kidding), I wove a square out of Artyarns Ultramerino leftovers.

As you can see….it’s acting weird. Very, very weird. (I really like that photo though. Good light today.)

Here’s how the fabric should look: all nice and even, flat.

Here’s what it looks like in the bottom half of the square…

See the slanty bits in the horizontal strands? The yarn was twisting, so I let out some of the twist, but I either did it too much or not enough. That’s what’s causing the curling! It’s the damnedest thing. Hopefully it’s just a one-off – or I’ll have to stick with the yarns I’ve used so far and had good luck with!

Final tidbit of the day (and I promise there are going to be some FO’s around here soon) – I was at Ikea the other day and bought this cute basket. I’ve decided it shall be…the shawl basket. Yeah, it’s actually full of shawls. They could be folded more efficiently to maximize the number of items, but for now – it’s just the right size!

(Visible: grey Charlotte’s Web, handspun Flower Basket, and Silken Clapotis on top.)

  • and what a dream!

Well, the weekend may be officially over, but I think I still kept my promise erin!

    Dreamcatcher Medallion Cardigan
Pattern: by Teva Durham, from Loop-d-Loop
Yarn: Elann Highland Silk in “Oxblood”
    Needles: Denise US 6
    Finished: April 22, 2006

It’s everything I hoped it would be! Comfy, perfect fit, and certainly eye-catching. The yarn was lovely to work with, a bit dry-feeling from the silk but beautiful nonetheless. I made the smallest size of the sweater, knit at a very slightly tighter gauge, which loosened up upon blocking. There was so much going on at once I had to write out a row-by-row guide! It certainly made things easier, though. My back neck seam, which I thought I’d have to redo after blocking, actually lies very well. And the medallion? Super easy to do, once you figure out the instructions (I had a bit of a snafu but still managed to finish it within an SnB evening).

All in all, a great knit. And the buttons? I got ’em at Fabricland, and you know, they’re perfect. Some may notice that it looks like I’m missing a button at the top of the band – and you’d be right. I only bought 6 buttons but actually needed 7. Eh, I can live without it. It’s not like I’d have done up the top button anyway!

And in new yarn – spun up a skein of merino in violets with a touch of blue. DIY light tent of the day – white pillowcase. I wonder if my mom would miss it if I cut it up to build a sturdier light tent?

  • the ehs

The ehs as in the blehs. Been a bit…uninspired by the knitting lately, although I have had great productivity with the spinning. Evidence:

Sleeves, take 2.5. Now you see ’em….(note: they used to be attached to the sweater)

    Now you don’t:

Yep, I ripped both sleeves of Cable/Rib entirely. It just. wasn’t. working. The sleeves were too baggy for the shape of the body, and the caps were too long, resulting in a weird just slightly puffed look. Back to the drawing board…this time, sleeves in the round, and perhaps (gasp) I’ll actually do the Maths on the sleeve cap. Or….I might cast on provisionally and do the cap first, sew it in, then knit the rest of the sleeve down once I get the cap right.

New Yarn: A lovely lemon skein of BFL, chain (navajo) plied. It’s still quite thin, and I just love the look of three ply.

Chocoberry BFL – milky chocolate brown, blues, and purples. 2ply.

Just a bit more finishing to do on Dreamcatcher – sewing in the sleeves and finding buttons. Hopefully some new (and inspiring) projects next time!
