    BPT
Pattern: BPT by Rebecca Hatcher, from Knitty
Yarn: Malabrigo worsted in “Azul Profundo”, 5 skeins
    Needles: Denise US 7
    Finished: December 29, 2005

    Notes:
Yay! Finally done and it feels so good! I put in the zipper today, and it wasn’t too bad although it isn’t perfect – there’s a bit of a ripple, and sort of a point at the bottom. I think it’s fine though, and I usually wear my sweaters half done up, so you can’t really see anything wrong.
The yarn, Malabrigo, is gorgeous. Although it did have a vinegar-y smell initially, it went away with washing – and I’m no stranger to vinegar, since I use it all the time in dyeing. I alternated skeins, which was a pain but worth it – no strange pools or blobs anywhere. I know the yarn isn’t going to hold up too well, but I’ll get me a sweater shaver. It’s soooo soft and warm.

Oh, and – I obviously didn’t do the hood, as I don’t really like hoods and didn’t have enough yarn anyway. Actually, I didn’t do anything for the neck – it’s just the cast on edge! Looks fine, so that’s the way it’s staying!

I’ve got another FO, too – the blue sky bulky from my previous post has become a nice cushy scarf for me.

I used 2 skeins of brown with US 17 needles, 8 stitches in 1×1 rib. It’s long enough to wrap around twice. I probably knit and ripped this thing about 5 times, because I just couldn’t get the right combination of needles, number, and stitch pattern! However, since the yarn is so very bulky, it always worked back up in no time at all.

On the demise of the retro ribs: it just was doing it for me. I think it was a little too much work for not a lot of payoff – the pattern just wasn’t popping the way I wanted, and I hated all that ktbl and purling, really. Ah well. I’m thinking maybe the Friday Harbour socks (from Knitting on the Road) for that yarn.

  • I wrote a huge post and then lost it

    Sigh. Let’s try this again.

Whew! Since my exams ended (finished the last one on Wednesday at 1:30) I’ve been running around! Two projects were gifted – the supermerino socks were given to megan-my-coworker (who put them on immediately), and the ultramerino socks were given to megan-my-boss.

Progress report – I’m lookin’ good!

    Done and Gifted
    robot #2 (red and black)
wine bottle cozy, containing a bottle of Nederburg Cabernet Sauvignon 2003
    cabled gauntlets
    – supermerino socks
    – ultramerino socks

    Completely Finished
    robot #1 (yellow and grey)
    ringel socks
    harry potter scarf
    Pasha!

Knitpicks Andean Silk, 3.75 mm needles. I think this is the best one I’ve made so far, and I’ve made four!

    Almost There:
    – felted clogs need bottoms cut and sewn – I’m using suede from the $3 bin at Exile vintage in the Market, and it has great buttons to salvage too!
    – fiery bolero. oy. I’m done the front ribbing, just finishing up the back ribbing. That just leaves the second sleeve to be hemmed and some seaming.

I’m so on track! The clogs don’t need to be given until late Christmas Day, so I’ll probably be sewing on the bottoms on Saturday.

So what does this all mean? New sweater!

    Cascade pastaza, 5 mm needles.

For those who wondered about my last post, I used Malabrigo in “Azul Profundo”, 5 skeins for the 38″ size of BPT with some but not a lot left over. Yum!

I uh, adjusted my thinking on the steeking of the fiery bolero. as you may recall, the sleeves turned out too long, so I was going to do some surgery involving crochet steeks. Which would’ve been a really elegant solution, I think.

    Meh.

A big ol’ hem. And no ribbing necessary, so I didn’t sew it up as much as I would’ve steeked off. Yes, it’s a bit bulky, yes it’s well, really not all that great. But I don’t have the mental energy right now spend working on it! I’ve only done the one hem, I’ll do the other one and the body ribbing after I’m done exams.

In other news…Saturday night I decided to make my grandma a tam (I also decided to just buy my grandpa some scotch and be done with it). I cast on with some Mission Falls from the stash, knit the band and a bit more that night, then spent pretty much all yesterday knitting the rest. I used Ann Budd’s book, and I remembered that Aven had some trouble with the same pattern. She resolved it by decreasing every row rather than every other, so I decided to let her experience be my guide.

As you can see, it’s a bit wonky – I know it’s supposed to be flat, and it’s really not. But I think it’s a perfectly fine hat nevertheless. My grandma’s more of just pull-it-on rather than the whole jauntily-tilted thing anyway.

Three gifts are already out the house (the wine and cozy, gauntlets, and robot #2, which I finished seaming directly before it had to be wrapped and therefore I didn’t get a photo) and I think I’m quite on track! Just the bolero, a bit of seaming on Pasha, and the bottoms of the felted clogs left to do.

So I worked on the Urban Aran.

It’s super long and skinny, but I’m gonna need some of that length to convert to width when I block!

One last thing – I managed to dye some hankies in a colourway I love so much I just had to show it (and it’s even more vibrant in real life):

Definitely reproducing this in wool and doing up some thick and thin. Or maybe sock yarn. Who knows!
