I graduated! (I’m feeling a little behind on the whole blogging thing…)

(Also, please ignore my crazy eye in this and following photos.)

It was a bit surreal, but the ceremony was pretty nice and not excessively long, considering the number of graduates – around 600? Anyway, since I know everyone will ask…University of Toronto, Honours Bachelor of Science, double major in biology and linguistics (although that isn’t written anywhere). Yes, that’s a weird combination; no, I don’t want to do anything with it; I’m not currently looking for a grown up job. I got home from work at 9:30 tonight (having left at 9:30 this morning), I think I’m working hard enough for right now!

Anyway, the downside of the work schedule is I work, I come home, I watch House on dvd and knit (new projects! soon) and go to bed. Wake up and repeat. This saturday I’m going glasses shopping, which is mildly exciting and very much needed – also, it’s a good time to get a new pair under the parents’ insurance!

And then there’s all the non-store work (and store work not during store hours) to think about too. Writing patterns and such. Lots of stuff going on. And the garden! Can’t forget that I’m a slave to the garden, which needs to be weeded and watered constantly. Well, the watering more I suppose, since that has to be done every day and the weeding can wait till the weekend.

Anyway. Off to bed, but definitely some knitterly updates this weekend!

  • it rained

Hoo boy, talk about a tough re-entry. I’ve been running around doing stuff since I got back from vacation – seeing the boyfriend, working, partying, family stuff. Hard to get back into the swing of blogging, especially when there’s so many things like photos and such to work through! This is going to be a highlights-only post. You can view my (rather enormous, it’s two people’s worth) vacation photoset at Flickr if you’re so inclined!

    Austin:
    – was great, weather was not excessively hot, but it did rain
    – ate at the Clay Pit, Casino El Camino, Amy’s ice cream, Teo gelato, Upper Crust Bakery
    – went down to South Congress and bought some great clothes
    – Hill Country Weavers: awesome! Yes, I bought some souvenir yarn
    IMG_0245.JPG

    – met Caro and Abbe and had a bit of a knit, which was lovely
    IMG_0250.JPG

    – Whole Foods and Central Market – super awesome
    IMG_0269.JPG

Katy, post Austin and pre cruise:
    – rained
    – went to my cousin’s high school graduation…in the pouring rain. It was cool though.
    – Lots of people in the house – 17! I slept on the floor that night, despite the cousins having borrowed three queen-sized air mattresses

    Cruise, first impressions:
    – boat was Rhapsody of the Seas, Royal Caribbean
    – huge! Really like a hotel on a boat.
    – rooms were quite comfortable
    – the weather was pretty bad – no sunning by the outdoor pool or anything, but I did swim in the indoor pool often
    – it felt like I was eating all the time – lunch buffet, dinner in the dining room, snacks…food was pretty good but I wouldn’t say spectacular.
    – formal nights were fun – we bought a few portraits of the family

    (me, mom, sister)

    Jamaica:
    – got a minibus taxi for twelve of us and went to the Montego Bay city centre (shopping area)
    – I just bought some souvenirs and coffee before heading back to the boat with my dad…the rest of the group planned to go to the beach but…it rained!

    Grand Cayman:
    – the boat was tendered, meaning you had to take another boat to get to the shore. It was, you guessed it, raining, and the waters were pretty rough so I opted to stay on the boat and just hang out.

    Cozumel, Mexico
    – finally, some sunshine!
    – snorkeling, my first time! Snorkeled in 25-foot water and was surrounded by a school of fish (which didn’t bite me, thank goodness). too bad I forgot to buy an underwater camera
    IMG_0478.JPG

    – shopping at the pier – very crowded, but I bought some vanilla, tequila, and random souvenirs. my mom bought me a nice bracelet from Diamonds International

    Cruise boat, parting thoughts:
    – I had a good time, but I don’t know if/when I would go again – I could definitely feel the rocking, and although I didn’t actually get sick, I didn’t feel all that great.
    – Service, especially at dinner, was very nice. Oh, and getting the room done twice a day wasn’t bad either ; )
    – I took a salsa class, which was super fun even though I was dancing with my rather short 10 year old cousin!
    – drinks on the boat – expensive.
    – getting off the boat was a bit of a trial since so many others were trying too as well! We did express departure and had to carry off our own luggage at 7:30 am.
    – seeing family and family friends was nice. lots of people to hang out with, especially in the card room – everyone was mad for cards!

    Getting home:
    – Had to wake up at 4:30 am to be driven to the Houston Airport
    – was sick that morning and slept most of the flight Houston-Detroit
    – Detroit-Buffalo flight was supposed to leave at 1:30 (we’d gotten to the airport at 11) but didn’t get in the air until 4:30!
    – all that, for a 40 minute flight to Buffalo. Boourns.

    Knitting:
    – almost finished Roundabout Tank from Knitting Nature
    – almost finished pair of STR socks, plain
    – almost finished Blue Heron tank top…but I ran out of yarn!

    in conclusion…
I’m happy with the vacation but glad to be back home! Now I can really get started on lots of exciting projects this summer. Lots of dyeing, designing, gardening, everything!

Whew. That was long. Back to non-vacation life!

  • that’s all, folks!

Wha-hoo! I made it! I’ll put up my grad photo soon ; ) My last exam went okay (not super-great, but fine) and I even managed to get an A+ on the last paper that I got back. It’s awhile until convocation (it’s June 20 for me) so there’ll be a wait for the piece of paper and cap-and-gown photo, but still. It’s all done.

And what did I do after? Go to the store, hang out for a bit, then go over to the boyfriend’s and have dinner and catch up on Grey’s. Not that exciting, but nice. And then the fabulous Joyce had a birthday party on Saturday night, which was the realy partying night (partied a little too hard).

Today I woke up late, had lunch (yep), went to check out the soon-to-be-mine allotment garden plot and then for a bike ride. Out for early mother’s day dinner, since my mom will be out of town next weekend. A few hours spinning and catching up on taped shows, and here I am – ready to unleash some backlogged photos of things.

    jitterbug socks

Finally finished – a pair of Jitterbug socks. 60 sts on Knitpicks US 0 circs, top down with a short row heel.

    blurry overhead shot

All the yarn was from the same ball, but no matchy! Oh well. These socks are really comfy and fit great. And I love the colours! So nice and bright. Although the yardage seems really short, it was fine – in fact, I wish I’d made the cuffs longer…

    nineteen

Oddly, the socks themselves weighed 89 g – so I had 108 g of yarn! Maybe I should start a leftover sock yarn blanket soon.

    New socks:

    a very lucky sock

STR in Farmhouse. I started these socks at the Frolic, and then proceeded to leave my go knit pouch and the sock behind when we left! I called the next day, and luckily they’d put it in the lost and found for me. It definitely wasn’t the worst thing I could’ve left, but I was very glad to get it back nonetheless – it’s working up really nicely.

Now? There’s so much crafting (and gardening) to be done! I’ve got a near-FO and a bunch of other random in-progress stuff, but I think it’s time I cast on for something celebratory. Guesses?
